Today’s reading is Luke 16:19-31 and there are two people involved in this account Jesus is giving to His disciples then, and to us His disciples today.
One of them is a rich man and the other is a beggar named Lazarus. The rich man had a chance to help Lazarus, who laid in front of his. The rich man died and was sent to hell, but Lazarus was carried by the angels to Abraham, who was in heaven. Not only does this account teach us that we must do our part in taking care of the poor, it also shows us about hell and its existence.
The rich man begged Abraham to send Lazarus so he could dip his finger in water and cool his tongue. The rich man was being tormented in a flame. The rich man was reminded of his lavish lifestyle and Lazarus unbearable conditions while they both lived on earth. Abraham then advised him he wasn’t able to do it anyway because of a great gulf (divide) between hell and the living.
What today’s reading shows us:
- There is a conscious existence after death.
- The torment of hell is real.
- There is no second chance after death.
- It’s impossible for the dead to communicate with the living.
