Daily Home Bible Reading Side Note – Forgiving Others

  • Matthew 6:14-15 (NKJV)
    • 14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
  • Matthew 6:14-15 (MSG)
    • 14 “In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can’t get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. 15 If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God’s part.

Probably one of the most used weapons by Satan in spiritual warfare is “unforgiveness.” It not only damages personal relationships, but it also damages our relationship with God. Satan has influenced people in the world to hold grudges, causing hatred, resentment and the destruction of family and community values.

Unforgiveness grows into resentment and it causes us to treat people that have offended us harshly. We snap back at them, ignore them and we become a respecter of people. And all of these results are not the nature of God, who we’re supposed to emulate.

We’re instructed to love those who hate us and bless those who curse us. We’re instructed to love our neighbors as ourselves. This cannot be done if we harbor resentment and unforgiveness for those who have offended us.

God has forgiven us for the sins we committed against Him. And we’re probably going to need to be forgiven again. Jesus was to the point when He said if we don’t forgive people who did us wrong, God won’t forgive us when we do Him wrong by sinning against Him.

Jesus, after all the suffering He went through on the cross didn’t hate His accusers, torturers or crucifiers. And if we claim to love Him and be His disciples, we have to do what He did and forgive the ones who hurt us. Before Jesus died, He said; “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

It is my prayer that we are able to quickly forgive those who have talked about us, lied on us, took things from us and hurt us. Because if we don’t forgive, God won’t forgive us.
